An Army sergeant was sentenced to death for killing five fellow soldiers in a shooting rampage at a general outpost (GOP) last year.

The High Court for Armed Forces issued the ruling on Monday, upholding the capital punishment by a lower military court.

The high court said in the ruling that the defendant identified by his last name Lim inflicted shooting attacks on his fellow soldiers and superiors at a front-line military unit located close to North Korean troops, causing a major vacuum in

national defense and damaged the morale of the military.

Lim was indicted for killing five comrades and wounding seven in a shooting rampage in June last year in the GOP of the 22nd Infantry Division in Goseong, Gangwon Province.
