I respond to both your above posts.

Ethnicity is not the same as Ancestry. Thats the key.

    From dictionary.com

an ethnic group; a social group that shares a common and distinctive culture, religion, language, or the like:

Much of these Polish ancestry guys dont know Polish anymore at all and their culture has shifted to being more American than Polish.

Yes they are Polish by ancestry: they have Polish dna in them, but thats it.
But those majority are not ethnically Polish anymore.

US has only what 1 million Polish speakers? Im sure there are stats somewhere on this.

    Now speaking of ancestry...

there are 10 million of them. I dont know how many are mixed (with Germans/Italians/etc), but thats irrelevant to discussion.

I think we understand ethnicity differently, so we'll have to agree to disagree

My grandma is from Illinois, I did her family tree and she's got ancestors in the us since the 1600s. She has some German/Swiss/French ancestry but not a massive amount and besides that she's basically all colonial. Even on ancestry.con they have her as being highly genetically related to the initial settlers of the Midwest. Here is her k13

Texas should have way higher German ancestry than the map indicates. Almost all native white Texans have Germany ancestry. Many many towns in Texas have German names they settled there massively.

That study by Katarzyna Bryc is based on 23andMe results of American customers.

I don't think it is reliable - because 23andMe underestimates minor components:

    http://www.theapricity.com/forum/sho...=1#post4373107

    Sikeliot for example noticed:

I've noticed very peculiar things happen with the 23andme calculator. I've seen families where one parent is Sicilian and the other is Irish. The Sicilian parent scores 15% Middle Eastern, while the child scores 0%. I've yet to see a half North European, half SE European (Cretan, Sicilian, Greek islander) score significant Middle Eastern even though full members of said groups score a significant amount.

Likewise, I suspect 23andme underestimates admixture when it is small. I have seen that in people with under 10% of African, the African is greatly underestimated on 23andme.

What do others think? I think due to its algorithms, 23andme ends up giving misleading results, but it is good for telling if a given ancestral component exists... just not necessarily the amounts.

My grandma is from Carthage, Illinois. I'm ashamed to say I don't even know where that is in Illinois as I've never checked on a map or been there lol. All I know about the place is it's where Joseph Smith the founder of Mormonism was killed.

Ah, western side of the state. My family's from the eastern side. Still, good to see someone with Midwestern roots.

My paternal grandfather was from Chicago too, but his parents were Slovak immagrants, his mom died though like a year after he was born and his father had to put him in a Lutheran orphanage , but he got a job there later so he sort of grew up with a father . His best friends my grandma told me were sort of Italian mafioso types. Just thought I'd share

This is not true. Most are Irish. The Scots-Irish are Protestants and don't (or rarely) call themselves Irish. Irish-Americans are Catholics and have Irish surnames. They mostly came relatively recently (1800's).
