not really common, on tv I heard sometimes surnames like Calabrese (from Calabria), Lombardo (from Lombardy), instead the surnames derived from towns are more common in Italy, while almost non existent in Sardinia

Romano = from Rome
Napolitano = from Napoli
Sorrentino = from Sorrento
Bolognese = from Bologna

Tolentino seems to be an exception, it's just the town name

very strange indeed, usually in the past these surnames with the name of a town were typically Jew or they were surnames invented by the civil registry office and given to orphans
