It's clear that even with the horrors of the Holocaust some Europeans, including Germans and Poles, are of part-Jewish descent. To give but one example the former West German President Helmut Schmidt had a Jewish grand-father. "Jewish-looking" Germans and Poles seem not uncommon. For instance Austrian actor Moritz Bleibtreu certainly looks Ashkenazi and he shares his surname with an assimilated German-Jewish family so this is a real possibility.
