THE US government has warned its citizens of possible terror attacks against US facilities and business interests in SA.

Washington has received "specific, credible, non-counterable" threat information, prompting the embassy in SA to issue a "security and emergency message" to its citizens and businesses in SA, it said on Tuesday.

Embassy spokeswoman Cynthia Harvey said the US government would co-operate with the South African authorities in any investigation into the terrorist threat.

The warning, posted on the embassy website, is rare for SA.

The note said US government and "other facilities identifiable with US business interests were the target of extremists".

"There is no additional information as to timing or potential targeting," it said.

The message urged US citizens to "review" their personal security plans, remain aware and vigilant of their surroundings, monitor local media for updates and follow instructions from local authorities.

Ms Harvey said security messages were not a reflection of the relationship with the country in which they were issued.

"They are part of our commitment to protect US citizens travelling and residing abroad," she said.

"The US department of state has no higher priority than the protection of US citizens overseas." She said it was standard practice to issue warnings when threat information was received.

The last time such a warning was issued was during the World Cup in June 2010.
