CHATHAM — Confederate memorabilia have been removed from display in the Pittsylvania County Circuit Courthouse following an order from Judge Stacey W. Moreau.

Members of the Pittsylvania Historical Society removed Confederate flags, medallions, plates, photos and other items from the historic Pittsylvania County Circuit Courtroom in Chatham on Tuesday afternoon.

The items were displayed behind glass doors at both sides of the entrance into the courtroom.

“It’s disappointing to me because I’ve seen it all my life,” Mary Catherine Plaster, the group’s secretary, said Tuesday while removing the items. Plaster is also on the judge’s committee in charge of artifacts in the courtroom.

Plaster said Judge Moreau’s secretary called her and told her to come remove the items. Moreau was not available for comment Tuesday afternoon.
