Default Deep Subclade of My Dad's MTDNA?

    Hello...

My dad's mtdna haplogroup as determined by 23andme is H3. As most of us probably know, 23andme is great in that it is the same $99 as Ancestry, but unlike Ancestry nowadays, it also gives you both haplogroups (if male). While it determines and shows one's core subclade, it does not reveal anything deeper.

dna.Jameslick.com is a neat and mostly pretty accurate mtdna predictor if you upload raw data from certain sites, including 23andme. I get this for his haplogroup when using the site:

    Best mtDNA Haplogroup Matches:

    1) H3(A73G)

    Defining Markers for haplogroup H3(A73G):
    HVR2: 73G 263G
    CR: 750G 1438G 4769G 6776C 8860G 15326G
    HVR1:

Marker path from rCRS to haplogroup H3(A73G) (plus extra markers):
    H2a2a1(rCRS) ⇨ 263G ⇨ H2a2a ⇨ 8860G 15326G ⇨ H2a2 ⇨ 750G ⇨ H2a ⇨ 4769G ⇨ H2 ⇨ 1438G ⇨ H ⇨ 6776C ⇨ H3 ⇨ 73G ⇨ H3(A73G) ⇨ (16519C)

Imperfect Match. Your results contained differences with this haplogroup:
    Matches(7): 73G 263G 750G 1438G 4769G 6776C 8860G
    Extras(0): (16519C)
    Untested(1): 15326

    2) H3d

    Defining Markers for haplogroup H3d:
    HVR2: 73G 263G
    CR: 750G 761G 1438G 4769G 6776C 8860G 15326G
    HVR1:

Marker path from rCRS to haplogroup H3d (plus extra markers):
    H2a2a1(rCRS) ⇨ 263G ⇨ H2a2a ⇨ 8860G 15326G ⇨ H2a2 ⇨ 750G ⇨ H2a ⇨ 4769G ⇨ H2 ⇨ 1438G ⇨ H ⇨ 6776C ⇨ H3 ⇨ 73G ⇨ H3(A73G) ⇨ 761G ⇨ H3d ⇨ (16519C)

Imperfect Match. Your results contained differences with this haplogroup:
    Matches(7): 73G 263G 750G 1438G 4769G 6776C 8860G
    Extras(0): (16519C)
    Untested(2): 761 15326

    3) H3

    Defining Markers for haplogroup H3:
    HVR2: 263G
    CR: 750G 1438G 4769G 6776C 8860G 15326G
    HVR1:

Marker path from rCRS to haplogroup H3 (plus extra markers):
    H2a2a1(rCRS) ⇨ 263G ⇨ H2a2a ⇨ 8860G 15326G ⇨ H2a2 ⇨ 750G ⇨ H2a ⇨ 4769G ⇨ H2 ⇨ 1438G ⇨ H ⇨ 6776C ⇨ H3 ⇨ 73G (16519C)

Imperfect Match. Your results contained differences with this haplogroup:
    Matches(6): 263G 750G 1438G 4769G 6776C 8860G
    Extras(1): 73G (16519C)
    Untested(1): 15326

Is there anything which can be said about his deeper subclade? H3a at the very least (the pan N.W. one, I believe?)

Also, is the common consensus still that H3 branched off in Iberia? It seems the timeframe for some of the subclades keeps getting pushed back.

    Just curious. thx broz

I don't think there is a consensus on anything at this point, not enough aDNA being available. But it seems Iberia is stll one of the likely places, and NW Africa having one of the highest diversity.

Very cool. Ill check it out after work. My YDNA is EV13 which isn't too common in Iberia and my mtDNA is C1b4. Maybe I can get a little deeper insight into their origins.

Interesting mine comes from Puerto Rico which the Natives there were said to be mostly South American in origin. Then again there wasn't as much genetic diversity in the Amerindian populations due to their smaller founder population(s) and not enough time to diversify before their genocide.
