All countries are nice. It's the politics/religion that fucks them up.

"For it is by no means the case that only those who believe in God could possibly have a vested interest in the question of His existence."

"Our civilization has had many religions and many dispensations of thought. But one of the things that we have forgotten is that open-mindedness to the future and respect for evidence does mean wooliness and an absence of certitude in what we are."

I think you're mixing three different concepts: country, nation and State. Thus, the definition of any of these three "jurisdictions" or "geopolitical levels" (looking for a neutral word here; insert your fav) also vary very much depending on the culture dealing with them.
On top of things, politics often run a different path of the ethno-geographic make up of nations/countries/States. Easy examples in history, from remote to more recent: Galician Kingdom/Kingdom of Portugal (an interesting case where the national/cultural union was strengthen after the political separation), Austro-Hungarian Empire, French Republic, Soviet Union... etc etc.
Sometimes a State is imposed into a People or group of Peoples, nation or group of nations, sometimes nations are disgruntled into a number of States or countries, or vice-versa, and so on, with little input from "the people"... Sometimes indeed there's a decent fit but that seems to be rare, unfortunately. Even in "modern western democracies" there often is a constant alternation between two major parties with (allegedly) opposing ideas, which reflects how fecked up (allegedly) "normal" societies can be.
If there was a perfect match between politics, borders and popular wishes we'd be saving a lot on wars and social conflicts, don't you think?

Country and state are the same thing for me.. nation as well. Let us not kid ourselves, nationhood has been corrupted by the ideals of the French Revolution. Disregard its roots, it is not connected to ethnicity anymore.
And the fact is that countries, states, nations, are political entities. They were born out of politics. How is two Germanic tribes coming into contact with one another, opening dialogue, arranging marriages &c any less political than what George Bush was doing in the Presidential Race? And at the end of the day, those Germanic tribes simply represent a very common system in which our modern nations and ethnicities were founded upon.
I will go one step further and say that ethnicity its self is a political entity. What is politics but the social interactions between men? Discussing what is for dinner with the wife and kids is every much as political as whether or not you're going to nuke Iran.
I am not saying it is all perfect.. I simply acknowledge that man is a political being and politics, at all levels, are laced throughout our societies.

If this is the case, then also monikers such as "Catholic" are political epithets, following the same line of reasoning. At least by function..
