    Default Finnish Citizenship Question

    Terve,

This is addressed to all Finnish TA members, maybe you can help me.

My grandparents were Finnish citizens and based on what I've read from http://www.migri.fi, I believe my father and his siblings were actually citizens of Finland born abroad, and are eligible to establish dual-citizenship. But, I want to ask other Finns' opinions.

My grandfather had an updated Finnish passport until his death in the 1980's. Surely this means he was still a citizen of Finland right? I know minun isoisä ja isoäiti were registered as resident aliens in the U.S., but so far I can't confirm
whether they became U.S. citizens or died as Finnish citizens.
This matters because the only way my dad can reestablish Finnish citizenship is if I can prove his father was still a citizen of Finland...

So...bottom line...you can only have an updated Finnish passport if you are still a Finnish citizen, right?

I doubt if any Finn will give you an answer, unfortunately. Long time not seen the only partially active one.

Can't you receive a reside permit in accordance to the right of return?

Then you should have no problems in studying and working there, as I understand you speak Finnish.

The procedure is similar in most Eu countries, and since your grandfather was a citizen he's in the registries of the state most likely. So you will probably have to show them a document attesting your father is your grandfather's son for the procedure to go through.

You can't have a passport without being a citizen afaik.

Thanks :-) I'm not the best, but I'll be fluent soon enough.

Thanks, I appreciate your input. That seems pretty much like the procedure I read.
