The killer of 69 Norweigians,Anders Behring Breivik, is treated quite well. In any sane country,he would have been executed by now.

I have to point out cuz i just thought of it and it's important: the purpose of prison isn't to deter people from committing a crime. No one thinks they'll ever get caught and so tough, austere prison conditions isn't going to stop anyone but it eases society's blood lust to know the murderer is living a shitty existence. I'm not fond of the death penalty not because I value the murderer's life but because we can't assume there is a hell or whatever where people are punished for their actions. What if the worst that occurs is simply non-existence? Let them live so they can have a harsh and miserable existence until nature takes its course.

Alcatraz - one of the most top-security prisons located on an island near San Francisco. The prison is supposed to be escape-proof, but some inmates have managed to escape from Alcatraz, but then struggled to survive in the cold sea and rough tides around the island prison.
