Sometimes I have trouble differentiating between Aussie and British accents (not the posh ones, but the street accents)

That's a given but a lot of people aren't aware of the Dutch involvement. A very interesting and bloodthirsty part of Western Australian history is the shipwreck of the Batavia off the Abrolhos Islands in 1629. There was plenty of murder and rape involved.

I'd heard! People sometimes think some other shipwrecked people married into the local population.

There was some testing of some Aboriginal groups to see if they could be the descendants of some Dutch that survived wrecks.

This article says -
