An Iranian origin is also possible, but the Avar theory is more likely since they were in close contact.

According to Contantine VII, Diocletian settled Romans in Dalmatia. He calls them 'Romani' because the term 'Romaioi' which meant 'Romans' was used for 'Byzantines'.
Then these Romans were expelled by Avars.
And the Avars were massacred according to the text by Croats who came from White Croatia (In the text White Croatia seems to have been close to Bavaria).
But some Avars continued to live with the Croats. Whatever their number was they seem to have been a minority.
Of course, the text might be wrong (although I personally believe that it was based on things 'Byzantines' heard from Croats themselves) but saying that Croats descend from Avars is weird. What's the reason for that?

the Oghur-Turkic theory is the strongest and most plausible one. Sadly 99% of Oghurs were assimilated/slaughtered.

It's soo small % of ''Avar'' haplogroups among Croats. Anyway, it's false theory, Croats are Slavs with small Latin (Dalmatia) and German (Zagorje) influence.
The haplogroup N-M214 was found only in Croatia (2.2%). It is very frequent in the Far East, like Siberia and China, while in Europe in Finns (60%) and in the Baltic countries (45%). Unusually for European populations, another central Asian-Siberian haplogroup P (i.e. Q) was found in unusually high frequencies in the islands of Hvar (14%) and Korčula (6%). The occurrence could have happened with the Avars migration, the ancient trade route Silk Road, or the Ottoman invasion. - this is from shitypedia.

I mean just have a look at these Bulgars, they speak Slavic and look Slavic for the most part, but their fucking ethnonym is Turkic. LOL.
