Some are just pretending in order to tease men but in general women are more prone to bisexuality than men.
99% of men are either hetero or gay. Bisexuals are extremely rare.
Many women, on the other hand, have a quite different nature and find it normal having relationships with people from both sexes, doing certain lesbian stuff with friends of theirs, etc.
Also, female bisexuality and (to a lesser degree) lesbianism are more of a social phenomenon than are male bisexuality and gayness.
Some females get involved in homo relationships 'cause they've been disappointed by their previous relationship(s) with a male partner. Of course, there's a chance some of these have always been the lesbo/bi kind but didn't realize it but certainly that's not the case of all of them.

I have heard people suggest that male and female sexuality is very different, thus homosexuality or bisexuality in females is different compared to men.

Not only women Heterosexuality is the rarest orientation,most people are closeted bi,I know from personal experiences,even the most 'hetero' people can turn out to be bi when given a chance.That's why clients of trans prostitutes are often married men.
