My paternal family thought they were full blooded Italian. So much for that. With my Y Chromosome being R1A1A I am assuming Slavic origin??? My most recent paternal ancestry from Calabria, Italy. Thoughts or insights appreciated. I'm actually pleased with the diversity.

I am trying to figure out what makes up the rest of your Italian side besides Italy/Greece. Calabrese typically have more West Asian, but maybe it came through other components this time.

You need to order R1a SNP Pack and see what is your subclade of R1a.

    Some subclades are not Slavic.

On 23andme I've matched up with a lot of Slavs. Also, what service do you suggest?

I tested with FTDNA but probably 23andMe is better when it comes to testing autosomal DNA.

When it comes to Y-DNA haplogroups - do they offer some equivalent of FTDNA's SNP Packs?:

This means nothing, you match up with them just because you share R1a.

But it doesn't necessarily mean that your R1a is a typically Slavic subclade.

I also have matches with people who are not DF27>L617, but some other R1b.

In general SNPs are superior to STRs, at least when you order low number of STRs. For example I ordered 12 STR markers and then upgraded to 37 STRs. From 12 STR markers you can only learn very basic things, like R1a or R1b. And 37 STRs is still not enough to determine subclade with certainty; after ordering 37 STRs it was only quite obvious that I have R1b-P312, but it was still not obvious which is my exact subclade.

Based on 37 STRs I was actually predicted to be L21 or U152, and it was wrong.
