Massive Unrest in Ethiopia

Pretty sad news considering that Ethiopia has been one of the success stories in African development registering over 10% economic growth the past few years, and actually just starting to ramp up massive investment in light industries and factories. It looked like it was following the model of many East Asian countries in moving up the development ladder by focusing on light tertiary industry investment first. But now with the unrest going on, hard to see how things will pan out.

It was long overdue...the regime in their active desire to open up Ethiopia to foreign investment did what all regimes with one ethnic group dominating, always do...use foreign investment to enrich and fortify their position at the expense of their historical rivals. The ruling ethnicity in Ethiopia are the Tigray-tigrinya, and the other predomiannt ethnic groups, the Amhara and Oromo are noticing that land reform and commercialized farming is only implemented in their lands. Ie, tigray lands are not being reclaimed and villages relocated, but Oromo and Amhara lands are.

Coincidentally, Tigray are the dominant group in Eritrea too...Infact, Eritrea's leader Afeworki and Ethiopia's former leader, Meles Zenawi are cousins.

I would think given the Ethiopian/Eritrean war, domestic sentiment against the Tigray would be so strong as to prevent them from taking power. I was surprised to read about that actually.

Very simple...the TPLF (Tigray People;s Liberation Front) defeated the Amhara led Marxist dergue in 1991, and were also instrumental in helping the EPLF (Eritrean People's Liberation Front...containing many Tigray but representing all Eritrean ethnic and religious groups). With the fall of Imperial Ethiopia, the Amharic dominated Dergue installed the 'red terror' and killed alot of people (leading to Eritrea's independence struggle).

The historical fact that Tigray region was highly colonized by Italians (much of Tigray is in Eritrea) means majority of Askaris in Ethiopia were of Tigray extraction, and the Italians really invested in the officer corp training of their colonial troops (Similar to how Syrian Alawites benefitted from French colonialism and were overrepresented in the colonial troops). Which is why when the Ethio civil war started in 1975, Tigray were overrepresented in the military leadership of the revolutionary groups.
