Default Russia says it could sell missile defense systems to Turkey

MOSCOW – A spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin says Russia could sell missile defense systems to Turkey.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, in comments carried Friday by Russian news agencies, that Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed potential arms deals at a meeting in Istanbul earlier this week. He said that Russia would considering selling various missile defense systems if Turkey wants them.

Turkey was negotiating a nuclear defense deal with China, which had been a source of tension with NATO partners, before the talks broke down last year.

The statement comes just a few months after Russia agreed to restore ties with Turkey. Relations between the two nations were nearly severed after Turkey shot down a Russian jet near the Turkish-Syrian border last year.

USA/UK have different agenda/interests than continental europe. They start wars, impose embargos and everyone must follow them. They don't ask permission or care about the consequences. I seriously think its about time Germany becomes a military power again. Somebody needs to protect european interests and also should be able to defend europe against imperialistic russia. The americans are doing this at the moment but at what cost?

Let's admit; treaty of versailles was too harsh. France has provoked the second war. It's not fair to blame only the germans for the death of millions people during WWII. Anyway the germans have already paid war reprations of WW2. It's now time to think about the future. Allow germany having a big army, to protect europe. Last but not least, germany should change things of symbolic value. The current german constituonal law is written/dictated by sword. It need to be replaced by a better , a 100% german one. The original German national anthem (Das Lied der Deutschen) is still censored. This is unacceptable.

In Turkey's case, I believe they somehow manage to do whats the best for its people. It seems like after the failed coup attempt erdogan distrust usa/nato more than ever.

ANKARA—Three years after disqualifying a Russian bidder for being too expensive, Turkey invited the same contender into the same contract for the acquisition of the country’s first long-range air and anti-missile defense system.

Turkish diplomatic and procurement sources said that the Russian contender was “invited” to make a bid again after Turkish and Russian presidents, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin met in Istanbul Oct. 10 on the sidelines of a global energy conference.

Turkey has been trying to mend fences with Russia after its Air Force shot down a Russian Su-24 fighter last November for violation of the Turkish airspace along Turkey’s border with Syria. After the incident Turkey and Russia froze diplomatic ties and Moscow imposed punishing commercial sanctions on Turkey. Under pressure Erdogan in August had to apologize and asked for détente.

Turkey in September 2013 selected a Chinese manufacturer, China Precision Manufacturing Import-Export Corp (CPMIEC), for its air defense architecture. Ankara said CPMIEC’s offer was priced at $3.44 billion.

The Russian bid was disqualified because it was “too expensive.” Officials familiar with the program said that the Russian solution was “twice more expensive” than the best price. Other contenders were a consortium of US companies Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, maker of the Patriot system, and the European Eurosam, maker of the SAMP-T.

Under pressure from its NATO allies, in November 2015, the Turkish government decided to cancel the Chinese contract and leaned forward building an indigenous system. It commissioned two local defense companies, Roketsan and Aselsan, to develop the system.

But since then Ankara has been negotiating, in parallel talks, with the US and European bidders. Now with the decision to invite a Russian manufacturer into the competition Turkey is opening up a three-way race.

Defense experts say that if Turkey selects a Russian air and anti-missile defense system it will have to limit itself to a stand-alone architecture, like it would when it selected the Chinese system. They say a Russian system, like a Chinese system, will not be made inter-operable with the U.S. and NATO assets deployed in Turkey.

Turkey seriously needs a long range Air Defence system. Even Iran and Syria has better Air Defence systems than Turkey. It's a good news for now.

The software such as IFF can be altered to make it "inter-operable".

    The best:

It commissioned two local defense companies, Roketsan and Aselsan, to develop the system.

Akkuyu'da kullanılmış uranyumun eskisi mi verilecek Rusya'ya? Öyleyse daha iyi.

I guess Russians would sell a downgraded version because Turkey is still in NATO and an ally of the USA. It would be foolish for Russia to risk its ennemies can study their anti missile systems.
