Sorry! I thought you had made a typo.

You're being idealist again. Cornwall has been part of the Kingdom of England since the latter even existed. Nations are not totally separated from political realities.
Since when have I shown any inclination to adhere to political boundaries in all the time you've known me, Os?

I simply don't consider Cornwall as English. I can't help that I have grown up to define my ethnicity by those which differ around me.

As long as you tell em it's bullshit too!

Sure, and that's why I mentioned the important demic aspect too, which you conspicuously didn't quote...

Too black and white. There is a grey area for Cornwall. Especially for certain parts of it (the ones you whizz thru in your haste to get to the beaches ).

    Fancy map time...

The bulk of my English ancestry hails from those blue areas. Mostly East Anglia (plus surrounding areas like Kent, London and Surrey) and Somerset/Dorset/Devon (Wessex?). I have ancestors who came from other parts, but that's the bulk of it.

One part of my family came from Derby in the 1820's, so that represents a good bit of ancestry.

It's well-known that many of the early settlers of Massachusetts were from East Anglia, and that's why I have a large number of ancestors from there. On the other hand, it seems most my Wessex ancestors went to Rhode Island. I'm not sure of any particular reason for that...must be something to it.

East Anglia has always produced a population surplus, relative to the rest of England, which could not support itself. This surplus occurred on numerous occasions from the 1700's up until the 1900's. The late 1800's/ early 1900's saw a government programmed which aided people in relocating to places up along the north eastern seaboard (Yorkshire-Northumberland); a number of Scotts with English ancestry will have East Anglian forbears. East Anglia also played a large role in the early English settlement of America; many of your political families etc have ties to this area.

The ancestral areas of which I'm aware currently are Gloucestershire, Huntingdonshire, Surrey and Somerset.

My mum's mum comes from Byker, Newcastle in Northumberland .
Mum spent her teenage years in Fenham, Newcastle, used to go down to Walker In newcastle to visit my Great grand parents.

My dad's dad from the the Lake District, cumbria which used to be Westmorland I think. Great grand parents and so on from that area.
