There were choices on both sides. The most powerful empire is doing what the most powerful empires always do. Does that make it right? It depends on your perspective. In the game of empire, might is right, just as it is in nature. Surely, the likes of Assad must have known this.

What about Assad? By sticking with Russia and Iran against the wishes of the US, the Syrian government sealed its own fate, and that of the entire nation. The relationship with Russia goes back a long way, and it was wrong from the beginning because it was and still is the losing side. The close relationship with Iran is a more recent thing, but it too was always the wrong choice.

Few countries get to be like Switzerland - most have to pick sides. For their sake, it's best if they pick the winner.
