A variety of English settled in the South, mostly from the southwest but also a hefty amount were from northern England. There were also the poor Londoners that settled all over. Then there were the Ulster Scots. Its pretty easy to understand Scots if I read it out loud.
Sure, English accents evolved, but a lot of the words and phrases used are stereotypically Southern, minus a lot that didnt enter our vocabulary because we’re linguistically stuck in the 1700s. Id try to find clips of older Southerners, especially former aristocrats. Change a few things in their speech and they’ll sound like they’re speaking RP.
Now, I might be able to relate more because Ive had speech training and a majority of that was Mid-Atlantic and the material I was taught with was all written by Brits. So, Ive had a lot of exposure to British accents compared to your average Southerner.
