Default Germanic Paganism: Teach me (please?)

I opened this thread because I have a vested interest in Germanic Paganism, although I haven't had a chance to read much about it or find useful informative texts devoid of any agenda (other than simply teaching people about the traditions).

I only know very little, that which I accumulated from myths and folklores, read to me by mummy dearest and my grandmother, as well as the occasional brief (and superifical) mentions in books about horses due to the Sleipnir connection.

So I am opening this thread in hopes (after briefly browsing the section from time to time) of learning more. Offer any of your insight, wether you practice it yourself or are simply knowlegeable on the subject. Any recommendations of books is also very welcome since I'm an avid reader.

And to start the ball rolling I have a question:

What (and who) are the Æsir and the Vanir and why Asatru rather than Vanatru (or vice-versa)?

I thank you in advance for taking the time to respond.
There'll be no diversity if we end up burning in the Melting pot...

I have heard of people identifying as Vanatru. As for the question of where to begin, most accounts of the mythology are just rehashings of Snorri's Prose Edda so may as well go straight to the source. For the core of the literature, the Poetic Edda.

I've often wondered if the "Eddas first" method of introducing Heathenry that the Reconstructionists favor is really the best route to go. To be sure that's the best way to introduce the mythos, but Heathenry, like any religion, is so much more than just stories about the Gods. And, I wonder if whether beginning with that is better or worse than doing so with something like Hilda Davidson's more holistic account in Myths and Symbols in Pagan Europe.

No. It is all bullshit and lies and you know it. It was written by weirdos who wanted to be dominated by women.

These could be from almost any religion.
