Birka is probably referring to African Africans with considerable white admixture, like Colin Powell and James Earl Jones. These people are considered "black" despite their very light skin tone.

That was my point, actually. I'm not a huge fan of the terms "black" and "white" anyway, especially all they seem to cause is a bunch of divisive head-butting over who is and who is not "white".

Rafael Nadal is "white", and if his skin looks dark it's because he spends a lot of time outdoors playing tennis. What else can be said?

Well, the demographics of Colombia and Argentina are quite different, but I get your drift. And you're right, people would make such assumptions, and there's also every chance they were right.
