Why do men kill themselves much more frequently than women do?

Actually women attempt to commit suicide more often than men. Men are more successful. But this is based on methods each gender prefer to use; women tend to choose more "aesthetic" ways, such as swallowing some pills, while men choose something more lethal, like jumping from the height.

Why more lethal? To go through more pain while trying to end their life to escape that pain?

I meant more instant. Swallowing pills isn't physically painful, and a person who overdosed it may: 1) change her mind; 2) be found and saved. On the other hand saving a person who have put a bullet in the head is rather problematic.
