While that is true to a large extent, there was significant settlement sometime during the expansion of the Vietnamese dynasties since the 15th century where they expropriated originally Khmer and Cham lands to Kinh and Chinese settlers. Many of whom intermarried with the Khmer and Cham populations of central-southern Vietnam. This is why ethnic Kinh from northern Vietnam can look quite northeastern Asian while a lot of ethnic Kinh from southern and central Vietnam tend look closer to Filipinos and Thais, although many individuals can have intermediate features between east Asian and southeast Asian.

When Champa (Central Vietnam) was conquered, the Kinhs committed genocide on the Chams so the mixing was likely minimal to none. Kampuchea Krom was conquered fairly recently and there were also a lot of Khmer Kroms that were killed there, so mixing was probably minimal to none there as well. There are a higher percentage of Chams than Khmers in their historic homelands.

The pre-20th century population of South Vietnam was massively smaller than that in North Vietnam, and North Vietnam flooded the south with several MILLIONS of Kinh settlers. So I doubt that the few mixed relationships that occurred in the 15th century are going to have much of an effect on the gene pool, at least not a noticeable one.

Although Vietnamese people tend to be lighter-skinned than other South-East Asians — especially if you put them side by side with their brown Cambodian neighbors — her phenotype, round face and rose skin, is still more appropriate for North-East Asians — people who live in a colder climate with less sunlight.
