I heard this song more than a decade ago. Never realised until now what the lyrics meant. Kind of a sad song rather.

Vitti na Crozza in sicilians should mean "I saw a Mussel"

he saw a mussel on a rock, he spoke to that mussle and that mussle says to him; he the mussel will die without a ring of bells, because he s not an human.. the mussels is very sad for that

It isn't about a dying homeless person (skull) then?

Lyrics here.. thought i'm not sure what Crozza in sicilian means.. i guess it means Mussel but i'm not sure

C’è nu giardinu ammenzu di lu mari
    tuttu ‘ntissutu d’aranci e ciuri,
tutti l’aceddi ci vannu a cantari,
puru li pisci ci fannu l’amuri.

Senti li trona di lu Mungibeddu
    chi ghietta focu e fiammi di tutti i lati;
    oh Bedda Matri, Matri addulurata,
sarva la vita mia e d’ ‘a mia amata.

Vitti na crozza supra nu cannuni,
fui curiusu e ci vosi spiari.
    Idda m’arrispunniu cu gran duluri:
    “Murivi senza toccu di campani”.

Sinni eru, sinni eru li me anni
chiangennu sinni eru, cun gran duluri…
ca’ si putissi ancora chiuù nun vurria,
cchiù nun vurria muriri chi pi amuri.

…Ah si putissi ancora, chiuù nun vurria,
cchiù nun vurria muriri chi pi amuri.

You know about folklore and dialects, whereas I can only put lexical similarities with French to the translation in standard Italian and google translate to do the rest lol. Cannuni translates to torre (tower) in the translation I've seen, though.

(great thread by the way, more should show their appreciation for the effort you put into this!)

Danielion's right, it's about a man's skull; crozza=teschio. Mussel in Sicilian is the same as in Italian (cozza).

    http://www.dossier.net/folk/crozza.htm

    Italian translation:

C'è un giardino in mezzo al mare
tutto intessuto di aranci e fiori,
tutti gli uccelli ci vanno a cantare,
pure i pesci ci fanno l'amore.

    Senti i tuoni del Mongibello
    che butta fuoco e fiamme da tutti i lati;
    oh Bella Madre, Madre addolorata,
salva la vita mia e della mia amata.

Vidi un teschio sopra ad una torre,
    ero curioso e volli domandare.
Esso mi rispose con gran dolore:
"Morii senza il tocco delle campane".

Se non era, se non era per i miei anni
piangendo se non era, con gran dolore...
ché se potessi ancora più non vorrei,
più non vorrei morire che per amore.

Ah se potessi ancora, più non vorrei
più non vorrei morire che per amore.
