Actually she remembers me, in this version, an Italian legend and celebration called Epiphania (the Apparition) celebrated on 6th January. Once a German woman who taught me German asked me why in Italy, a catholic country, we celebrate a witch. The celebration has obviously pagan roots and fascism encouraged people to celebrate epiphany instead of Christmas.

This figure exist also in the germanic mythology with the name of Berchta (personification of winter).
Both in the Italic and Germanic version the old lady seems to rapresent the end of the year (and of the life of course) and the beginning of a new life, therefore maybe the popular tradition that Befana is a good old witch who brings gifts to children.
