We threw NOTHING away which could be salvaged in those days. But that was an old Yankee tradition exemplified by the then-familiar verse:

The only INCANDESCENT light bulbs with which I have had any trouble are those in the ceiling fan in my kitchen. The vibration of the fan tends to break the filament. I have had little problem if any with compact fluorescent lamps and none from LED lamps. So, I don't think that the quality is inferior.

I remember having lots of bulbs to return every month for new bulbs when I was a lad in the 1930's and World War II, so I doubt that those bulbs lasted any better than, and probably much less than today's.

Some newer bulbs don't fit the older fixtures. I also find the quality of brightness bothersome. They can be blinding to my experience. I don't know what technologies they are; LED or otherwise. Reading and comparing packages. Some sound like improvements but these sound built for newer homes with different wiring. Cheapest to some expensive bulbs and they don't work properly if too modern. They die of electric surge or when they say it will last they don't. Yet the wiring of an older built home doesn't seem to suffer damage. I try not to purchase these on the internet, I think I once purchased not made for the region at all, maybe light sockets are different such as wall outlets. I forced it in and when I turned the light on it popped!
