Homophobia, Why Eastern Europe is so homophobic?

I have watched a tv program about homophobia in Russia. In Russia you can go to jail if you say in public that you are gay...or you can be beaten or even killed for some homophobic group without any legal problem for them.
I can't understand this kind of hate, it has no sense.

I have always thoght that this kind of homophobic people are in fact gays...and they can't accept themselves and project their frustation against "free gays".

What do you think? Why Eastern Europe is so homophobic?

I find homophobia to be the most base and profane of all prejudices. When my mom explained to me what gay means when I was in 3rd grade, it never occurred to me to hate someone because they love someone of the same sex. The mere thought of it is ridiculous.

All sorts of more archaic views are always at a higher peak in Eastern Europe.

Doesn't matter if its homophobia,xenophobia,islamophobia,you see a big lot more of each here than in the mentally subdued West.

In my coutnry a lot of them are actually the social norm,and even the media stands behind them at some extent.People that practice them are made into everyday heroes.
