yes and no. yes, because today Turkey has different geo-political interests than Europe. And no, because otherwise Turkey would be alone in terms of millitary power. A good alternative would be a Turkic alliance TAKM which was founded in 2013 I think.

US General: Turkey Should Be Kicked Out of NATO

Turkey pursues its own interests in the Syrian conflict and it is not cooperating with NATO or other forces in the region, a retired US Army Major General Paul Vallely said in an interview with RT.

The downing of a Russian Su-24 bomber by the Turkish air force will hardly be the last act of provocation by Ankara, so NATO should kick Turkey out of the alliance, Vallely said.

Are Washington’s Fingerprints All Over Downing of Russian Su-24 Bomber?

He believes that the attack on the Russian aircraft had nothing to do with protecting national borders. It was aimed at demonstrating to Russia that Turkey is the dominant power in the region and that it’s not going to give ground. The president of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been involved in the conflict in the area for quite some time, and this incident isn’t the first of its kind: a few years ago Turkey shot down a Syrian jet.

According to Vallely, the Su-24 incident was a clear provocation. And since Turkey seeks to control the situation in the region and lays claim to being a regional leader, it is going to continue to commit provocative actions in the future.

NATO should consider this incident a red flag, the retired Major General stressed. Turkey unilaterally made a decision to down a Russian plane and showed that it is not going to agree its actions with the alliance. This has been Ankara’s policy for a long time.

“They want to recreate their own Ottoman Empire to a great degree, and of course Erdogan is moving more towards a controlled Islamic State [ISIL]. So they have the wrong agenda

I think that's a sensible direction for Turkey to pursue.
Turkey was very useful against the Soviet Union due to its geography.
But now that the Soviet Union does not exist, and Russia is not a communist empire, I don't really see the point of NATO to begin with.
If I were Trump I would completely reconfigure NATO to fight our actual modern concerns all around the globe, and I would not call it NATO, and would not limit countries based on how close they are to the Atlantic ocean. I think NATO is outdated already. I wish Trump could do something about it.

If you could replace NATO what would you replace it with?

I would create an Anti-Islamic Front. Countries like Albania and Bosnia are welcome to join but they must end their membership to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

What do you think about Armenia and Georgia joining NATO? (if Russia agrees, of course).

OK, let's agree for a moment that we created this front, this military alliance. Can you describe the enemy now? How many soldiers they have? Where is their Fleet(s), how many pieces of artillery they have, where is their aviation, etc, etc.

What do you think about adding or removing certain countries to NATO?
Do you like the state of NATO today? What, if anything, do you think can be improved?
Very pacific organization last years. after Gaddafi regime destruction there's no worth mentioning events. Obama, Hollande and Merkel are childrens of flowers from 60's and that's the problem. As a result large scale wars and refugee crisis.
