Is "Europe" a thing?

I have heard before about "European unity". But how could that exist? When,looking back in history, was Europe an actual concept?
Considering your grandfathers all spoke different languages and have spent the 20th centrury trying to kill each other, it seems to be nothing more than a myth at this point.

Yes because for a large part of History Europe was the whole world to Europeans, but that doesn't mean they were any sorts of united, often the opposite.
I don't think that Europeans consciously think of themselves as one or united, but when you bring them together with vastly different folks they will unite and understand their likeness to each other. That is the case in the US for example. While not identical almost all European nations resemble each other in terms of architecture, living ways, culture and traditions etc.

It's about culture and values. People in Europe have similar values. People in Europe want the freedom of movement. It is feasible in such a cultural continuum.
Other than that - there are many things that unite people in Europe - genetics, common foe (at least for half of the Europe). Language - although people speak different language, most of them take root from one proto-language that originated in Europe (easternmost reach of it, but still).

Thanks to the EU, Western Europeans could emancipate themselves from the American influence (USA = the good cop). Thanks to our Common Agricultural Policy, we no longer needed to buy your corn and your meat.
In the meantime, Eastern Europe was being brainwashed by their Soviet puppetmasters (USSR = the bad cops).

Europe was a concept before Europe had written language.

No one likes to say "aryan" any more but europe is all related to each other in ethnicity speaking IE languages, which are not spoken elsewhere except on the fringe of europe and asia.

All of europe is closer to each other by far than it is to any outside location. But just because europe exists does not mean that individual countries should lose their identity, that just leads to decay and extinction.
