    Default Are Portuguese just Spaniards?

Is Portugal just Spain as Castilla, Aragon, Navarre, Leon, Galicia or Granada? Are Portuguese just Spaniards?

Portuguese look quite different from Spanish, and it goes beyond typology. A portuguese Atlanto-Med looks different than a spanish one.

Christian kingdoms emerged with the christian reconquest. Portugal was one of those kingdoms and it separated from the kingdom of Leon and became independent in 1143.
A map of Europe from 1250 will have Portugal with its full borders as it has now, making it one of the oldest in Europe:

The language is most similar to galician but it evolved separately so now it's slightly different, and genetically there is overlap with nearby spaniards.

    So the answer is no.

    Not really.

While one could argue that the rupture of Portugal from the kingdom of Leon led to an artificial division not in consonance with the shared history and culture of the realms involved, it is also true that Portugal has been its own thing for the last 850 years barring a brief interruption by the end of the XIV century and a longer one between 1580 and 1640. This long period of independence from the other Iberian kingdoms slowly made Portugal a bit different respect to the former; their language, for instance, shifted from Galician, plus the Portuguese crown soon developed interests and endeavours that crashed with those of Castile.

Vasco De Gama for example, considered himself a Portuguese or a Spaniard?
