You might find some exemples in minor league but honestly I never witness it in professionnal league.

There is also a rugby tournament with club from South africa, New zeland and Australia. Some Japan and Argentinian team join the competition not a long time ago and that's possible they loose all the game of the season.

I think you're going a bit far, but it is true that the gap in standards between top and bottom is bigger in La Liga than in the Premiership.

premiership teams (especially the big ones like Liverpool, Man U) think its a big shame to play in the UEFA cup...Liverpool probably field a weak line-up to rest their starting 11 for a league game

But for Spanish clubs UEFA Cup is a big thing (just the broadcasting rights and prize money $$$ is like a lottery for them).
