Could Karadağ mean "northern mountain" ? (Taurus ? Caucasus ?)
You Turks all know that the word "kara" (sometimes spelled qara) exists in all Turkic languages of the Oguz and Kipchak families. So, I shall explain for all the non-Turks.

Kara roots back to Proto-Turkic. The four cardinal points were refered to colors:

-Doğu (East): mavi (blue), yeşil (green)
-Batı (West): ak, beyaz (white), Akdeniz (White Sea = Western Sea/Mediterranean)
-Güney (South): kızıl, al (red)
-Kuzey (North): kara, siyah (black), Karadeniz (Northern Sea/Black Sea, replaced the Greek Eúxeinos Póntos in all languages)

But the Kaçkar (means "cross" in Armenian) and the Pontic Mountains (Doğu Karadeniz Dağları) are located in northern Turkey.

Besides, I'm a turkophile. I started to learn your language 15 years ago. My skills are now rusty, but at least, I can have a basic conversation (sohbet) with Turkish guys whenever I buy a döner kebab or köfte. And I'm always sure to get free coffee.
I like Turkey and I support its accession to the EU, but I dislike Erdoğan and his AKP.
