Syria is no longer a civil war. This is no longer a civil war for a while now. Now it's a massacre, a genocide. And as if that were not enough, there is a kind of chess game between warlike superpowers.
The US supports the insurgents, while Russia supports the local government. The fact of the US is a challenge for the terrorist groups that have turned against the Western world. Russia, for its part, is supporting logistic and military support for Assad's troops. That is, all the excess rules for governments are closely linked to Russia. Russia is directly guilty of this genocide.
There are reports that they are killing themselves and killing their Sons to not be raped by Assad's troops. The truth of this news can not be confirmed 100%, but I do not doubt anything.

Sorry but blaming only Russia is a stupid thing to do, everyone who took part in the civil war is responsible for the massacres and the aftermath, both the US and the rebels and both Russia and Assad. The question is more about which side is doing the right thing for peace and stability in the country.

I haven't done too much research yet, but to my understanding, it seems supporting the rebels would eventually make Syria more vulnerable to the influence of ISIS and the motivation of the rebels seem to be unfounded since they are mainly motivated by revenge-seeking and religious zeal more than anything else. From this I think Assad is definitely the lesser evil of the two.

There's also the fact that the US government has a strong history in the last decades of creating useless tensions and wars in the middle-east, to me everything points out to the US, they're the ones who want a destabilized middle-east.

Its very simple.
