Well Italy have been useless most of the time since they joined, so if Spain rapidly progress in the second-tier European tournament and win it, then maybe they could swap places.

Well I was joking. Spain is to light years of national teams as Englands, France etc
But it is funny to see it playing (and winning!! ) against Germany, Belgium, Russia etc

    Italy are too, arguably.

Spain is definitely up and coming in the sport, and maybe in a few years time might give Italy a run for its money, just as Georgia and Romania already do.

Let's put it clear: in countries like Italy or Spain, where an intense football culture is part of national identity, rugby is only the second choice of dudes who are too clumsy (or too overweight...) to be accepted in football club schools.
Beyond some brilliant indiiduals like Dominguez, Parisse (both Argentinian born BTW), Castrogiovani, Bergamasco, the average quality of Italian players equates the level of amateur regional leagues.

How Argentina manages to be a force to be reckoned with in both football and rugby, I'd like to know.

Castrogiovani is also Argentina. 3 out of the 4 "Italians" you mentioned are Argentine

True, but along with Wales and South Africa, Argentina have been particularly disappointing since then. Yet again they only won one match in the Rugby Championship - at home against the crappy Springboks side - lost at home to France by a whopping 0-27, scraped past Italy 30-24, and for the first time did not win any match in the European Autumn Internationals. (I attended the Wales-Argentina match btw, when Wales narrowly won 24-20).

Stade Francais just won the european challenge cup (the equivalent of ligue europa in football) against gloucester. A good news for a team who were close to disapear this year.

Today Clermont play against the Saracens, another english team in european cup.
