It wont work out. Living in a liberal self-righteous smaller nation that clings onto a larger more neo-liberal right neighbour that domiates the media. Stay Canada! Stay USA! You don't want a Great America.

California Crisis! How To Spend Budget Surpluses
The current budget battle is underway, and it is presenting the “same real problem as last year” when the state’s fiscal analysts found $3.1 billion more in surplus than Governor Brown estimated; this year the surplus is substantially more.

I don't believe in centralization of things as a centralized bureaucracy on a federalized level is a deadly oppressive combination. As such things becomes eventual internal strife over controversial policies leads to civil unrest and eventual fragmentation. That will lead to autonomous, vassal states up for grabs that rises from the ashes. Decentralization is a better alternative to control such matters within a reasonable scope. A decentralized, militarily-strong nation is a better alternative by having a strong, influential industry in itself would prove to help it be very self-autonomous. With self-autonomy, one can advance the sciences, technology and military to unfathomable levels to build up its prestige and influence over those that seek to threaten it. Which is why I'm more inclined towards the isolationist approach from things that doesn't concern the nation's interests.
Having too much dependency on others merely weakens one's nation to be feeble. Nevertheless, I feel the merger will complicate things than it is worth. Needless to say, always stay vigilant, self-sufficient and well guarded against other nations that threatens a nation's stability accordingly.
“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.”
