Default 10 places you'd like to go

Where would you most like to visit next? What are your priorities and dreams for future travel?

My list used to be much longer and a little more exotic, but the World got nastier since the eighties!

Bayreuth, to see the Ring! I hear that it’s very difficult to get a seat though? 1 in 20 applications only are given!

Isle of Man, so near, yet so far. Ancient links with Lancashire, England and Ireland.

Norway. I’ve seen some belting photos of the mountains there, and may actually go and see this year.

Lewis and the rest of the Outer Hebrides. I don’t know why, exactly, just the fascination of going right up to the furthest northwest… Maybe even St Kilda!

Angeln, Schleswig Holstein. Would be nice to see where the English first came from.

The Alps. I was in Austria years ago, but that was before I had glasses, and I suspect that I didn’t even realise what I was missing out on in terms of views!

Athens. Can't believe I haven't made it that far yet!

    Rome. Ditto!

Iceland. Especially if I could get to see the Northern Lights.

Kiev. A prominent gap in my Russian experience.

    The Hermannsdenkmal

    The Walhalla Temple

    Library of Friedrich Nietzsche

Anywhere in the British Isles that has huge rolling hills where my wife and I could have a picnic and then go to a pub afterwards.

I can't think of any others, though there are many places I would never turn down the chance to go.

I completely forgot and am shamed.

A small village called Schwanden near Grosshöchstetten, Switzerland. I've many ancestors who came from Switzerland, but the first one to come to America was born there.

Our European tour will hopefully include:

    Asturias, Spain
    Poitou, France
    Betagne, France
    Normandie, France
    Bristol, England
    Canterbury, England
And then probably a million places in Scotland

Most of these spots are where out ancestors originated, so it would be a kind of roots tour of Europe.

Ten of the places I am eying on a map:

Brittany, especially Carnac. It is not just because of my heathern love of megalithic monuments. I read too much Asterix as a kid.

In Germany, Teutoborg Forest, specifically Externsteine and Wewelsburg, and then Baden-Würtenburg in search of German Renaissance art especially the paintings of Matthias Grünewald.

    Ireland, especially New Grange.

    Greece, especially Delphi.

Sweden. When I was there I missed Götland and Tanumshede.

Norway to see the stave churches.

    St Petersburg for the Hermitage.

    Newfoundland

    Santiago de Compostella

    Jutland for various runestones.

    In no specific order:

Malta - my father's homeland. So small you can ride a bike around it in a short space of time!
    Anywhere in Ireland
    Anywhere in the English countryside
    Scotland
    Norway
    Denmark
    Sweden
West Coast of Australia and Tasmania
    Canada
    Germany

I know this says 10, but I would also include the Netherlands and Belgium, along with Greece and Italy.

    Thumbs up Lovely thread ...

    Well, let's see:

    Norway

I've already been to Sweden and Finland, but not yet to Norway because it's most expensive (but also the most intriguing!)...and like I always say "I want to see the fjords before I die

    Iceland and Faroe Islands

Beautiful landscapes, both amazingly interest from a linguistic and cultural point of view

    Italy

Believe it or not, I've never been there... And I have *got* to see Venice and Florence, they must be absolutely beautiful... And Rome...historically significant and great food

    The Baltic States

That will be resolved soon, as I am planning a trip in the summer

    India

The holy city of Varanasi (Benares), the religious and spiritual centre of India with the most interesting traditions. Don't worry, I won't use a public restroom

Dharamsala, the Buddhist municipality of northern India, also referred to as Little Lhasa

    Thailand

Not for sex tourism, but to see those temples, and enjoy a cocktail while I'm at it

    Mongolia

...and the Gobi Desert. Mysterious land of astonishing beauty, warrior tribes with nomadic lifestyle and fascinating horseback archery traditions.

    Socotra Islands

It's not a tropical paradise! It's actually the most interesting place in the world when it comes to biodiversity of flora and fauna...Darwin's paradise

Socotra is considered the "jewel" of biodiversity in the Arabian sea.[2] The long geological isolation of the Socotra archipelago and its fierce heat and drought have combined to create a unique and spectacular endemic flora (which may, therefore, be vulnerable to introduced species such as goats). Surveys have revealed that more than a third of the 800 or so plant species of Socotra are found nowhere else. Botanists rank the flora of Socotra among the ten most endangered island flora in the world. The archipelago is a site of global importance for biodiversity conservation and a possible center for ecotourism.

    Australia

Because it's a distant, fascinating land with pleasant people and great view to the ocean

    Vermont

Bercause of those colors, and because I had an intense dream about it, and because I have a dear friend that promised me a farm job should I ever get tired of the city life

    Antarctica

I want to find out if the Earth is really Hollow?

    Not in any particular order

Santorini - have already been to Greece, Rhodes to be precise, but each island has a look all of its own. Santorini looks special.

Iceland - quite fancy touring the island and crossing over to the Vestmann Islands.

Orkney and Shetland Islands - these places look magical.

Tristan da Cunha - a distant British colony and the remotest inhabited island in the world.

    Australia but more specifically Tasmania.

New Zealand - to see the amazing landscape and just take in the power of the earth.

Russia, Kamchatka - incredibly remote but awesome to look at.

The Aleutian Islands - very similar to Kamchatka geologically speaking.

The Galapagos Islands - to take in the incredible flora and fauna of the place.

Seychelles - just for the luxury!!!

Just realised that my choices were all islands. up

    Scratch 'maybe' - DEFINITELY!:

    Woo!
I bought a book called summat like "The Life and Death of St Kilda" a few weeks ago, and am looking forward to having the time to read it!

My hills up the road are a bit more jagged and precipitous, probably not too suited to your taste, especially if you were planning any shameful frolicry to go with that picnic. Liable to break your neck if you did it on Whinberry Rocks...

Aye, that's a good one, a real must-see. Been meaning to write a book on the Atlantic-Irish Sea cultural area...
In Germany, Teutoborg Forest, specifically Externsteine and Wewelsburg.
    Ah, of course!
    Ireland, especially New Grange.
Been there. Very impressive. Be sure to see Maes Howe on Orkney too, Bryn Celli Du on Ynys Mon, North Wales, and Wiltshire's West Kennet Long Barrow. up
Norway to see the stave churches.
Another for my list. I may be going to Norge in the Summer, but we'll be hiking, so I'm not sure I'll get to see these. Are any on good routes? One of our group loves to fish, so if it's near a good trout stream it may help my case...
    St Petersburg for the Hermitage.
Impressive stuff there, especially the archaeology. Lots of great Scythian things.

As for Mongolia, I've been to Buryatia and seen Lake Baikal and was proper gobsmacked.
In the neighbourhood, I nearly got to go to the Sayan Mountains last year, but had my documents nicked which ruined everything. There are some amazing sights in the mountains above Abakan, where Khakassia borders on Krasnoyarsky Kray.

    That them in the pic?
Orkney and Shetland Islands - these places look magical.

Aye, Shetland's on my list, and Orkney will need a revisiting. I was only there a day, we took the boat over, leaving the vehicle at John O'Groats, and were driven in a coach to Skara Brae, Brodgar, Stromness, Kirkwall, and the Ronaldsays.
Russia, Kamchatka - incredibly remote but awesome to look at.

I'm reading about them at the mo. A young woman, Marina Galkina, walked all over them all on her own. Bears! I wonder if my Russky hiking mates would be up for it next year?
