It still had industries build back by soviets and a strong eastern germany was vital to soviets just like a western germany was for the americans.

Germany is located in Central Europe, meaning they had the most strife to deal with coming from all 4 directions north, south, east and west. Then once the situation was stabilized they splintered into warring principalities with lots of ambitious leaders competing with each-other..... Then finally survival of the fittest strikes again when there was 30-year-war (8,000,000 weak Germans died, leaving behind only stronger, smarter, tougher etc.) These people have high Dopamine - they had to in order to survive. Also they are a 50-50% mix of hunter-gatherer and Middle-Eastern farmer which makes them a hybrid and healthier.
