I doubt Americans are denying NYC was crime-ridden during the '70s through even the '90s. A lot has improved since however (difference of night versus day) and whereas people who could would flee the city previously (because they couldn't afford to live in the nice neighbourhoods), much of the previously crime-ridden areas is attracting people. I don't know details though. A guy like Colonel Frank Grimes might.

However, I have talked to Americans on the internet back in 2004 who used to originate from NYC but moved to South Carolina. They fled the crime. "I like South Carolina, it's better, but it has so many blacks though." Very unadulterated non-PC chat it was all while I was playing Diablo 2 on an American server out of curiosity.

Anyway, at least such photography could flourish back then already, whereas the USSR only published an embellished version of their reality. A reality, I might add, was luckily not a condition most Americans had to live in.

No, Putin was a young novice, a candidate spy. These images were used by Soviet propaganda, to convince your parents and relatives that the West was a terrible place, and that the real paradise on earth was the Soviet bloc.
The ridiculous is that you have dusted these pieces of communist propaganda and you're using now.
I advise you to show to your parents these photos before publishing, and ask their opinion.
