Not like in the muslim world true. But you will get ostracised a bit, especially if you're say in the army. In a way the US is like Europe in the 1950s (you would be ostracised from society, possibly lose your job), or rather was recently (say a few decades back). People pretend they aren't atheists because they think it's a dirty word and invent strawmen of atheists being arrogant snobs because some people get their panties in a twist over it.
