Are you talking about the downfall of the Ottoman Empire during WWI which also coincides with the Bolshevik Revolution? Or do you mean classical liberalism which has little to do with the question?
Part of the problem with any guilt which emerges with Western liberals, is that we were in no way responsible for the Muslim world cutting its people off from education and the printing press one hundred years before the downfall of the Ottoman empire.
A more current explanation sometimes used, is the progressive anger at the United States in particular for their dealings in the Middle East, that this explains why Islamism began to flourish.
