If I knew that, I'd feel safer around the Sikh. But going only by appearances, the average Westerner is going to see an Asian (safe) and a "Middle Easterner" (unsafe). It's especially not racism, though, because it's born of fear, not hatred.

Islamophobia, which isn't a term I like, is indeed racist. Race originally never implied only biology. A race was a people, which is much more a cultural concept than a biological one. The assumption that Western culture is superior to Islamic culture is racist because it judges Islamic culture on Western criteria, it assumes a priori that Western culture is superior. I would argue that it is not at all superior, simply more complex, though that very complexity signifies decadence.
