A SUPERVOLCANO on the brink of blowing threatens to wipe out Europe, kill millions “immediately” and bring the world economy to its knees.

    By Joshua Nevett
    Daily Star
    February 1, 2017

Around two thousand years ago Mount Vesuvius erupted, destroying the Roman city of Pompeii and killing an estimated 1,500 people.

Today, a far more sinister supervolcano named Campi Flegrei is lurking underneath Naples in Italy.
    http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/late...n-Christmas-UK

Shock research, revealed last month, warned that the “big daddy” of Vesuvius is showing signs of “reawakening” and may be on the brink of going off.
    http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/late...a-Italy-Naples

Should it blow in a “big one” eruption, experts told Daily Star Online thousands, possibly millions, of people across Europe would be killed “immediately” from incineration and suffocation.

Dense black ash clouds would block out the sun, plunging the continent into months, if not years, of eerie darkness.

Tens of billions would be instantly wiped off the global economy as air travel, industry and farming would be ground to a halt.

The environment would take a pounding too as a boiling black cloud of hit gas would shoot into the atmosphere, triggering acid rain and accelerating global warming.

Worryingly scientists cannot predict and have no idea when it will next blow its top.

Dr. Luca De Siena, the Geophysics professor at the University of Aberdeen, is one of the leading experts researching the volcano.

Campi Flegrei last blew in 1538 in an eruption lasting eight days that formed a new mountain, Monte Nuovo.

It's concerning and worrying, although I'm rather dubious and sceptical about the claims of 'the world economy being brought to its knees' and 'millions of people will die' are exaggerated due to the source of the information.

Volcanoes have been happening eversince the geological formation of this planet billions of years ago. In more recent years, we've seen massive clouds of volcanic black ash pass over from the volcanic eruptions in Iceland which temporarily obscured the views of the sun and disrupted all flights to and from the UK while the large ash clouds passed over... but that was only temporary and the sun-star is still visible. Although that wasn't a supervolcano, so maybe that's not a good comparison to show that life still continues after a volcano.

If people are aware of the occurence of a natural disaster, they're usually forewarned by the government, and safety preparations are made as people will evacuate the area.

Is there a more reliable and reputable source for this though, rather than The Daily Star..? I'm not sure if people outside of the UK are aware of this paper, but it's one of the worst tabloid newspapers in the UK, that's full of images of topless models, and sensationalist, exaggerated, and eye-grabbing headline claims (like with The Sun and The Mirror.)

Anyway, if it's true that millions of living creatures could die soon, then it's best to leave it with the geologists and experts to fix the flaws with this imperfect planet, as depending on self-diminishing terms like 'hope' and sitting around praying won't solve much or change events. It's more reliable to depend on taking practical measures.

Unfortunately, there are no practical measures which can be taken. It is not even possible to predict volcanic eruptions, much less to control them. The best that has been accomplished to date is to divert lava flows from specific sites, such as the Keflavik geothermal power plant in Iceland. In a "supervolcano" eruption, this would be ludicrously inadequate. There has been no such eruption in historic times though the eruptions of Krakatoa and Tamboro, neither of which qualified as a "supervolcano" had worldwide effects.

My thought is why did anyone in ancient times settle near Naples anyway, seeing a giant volcano right near it?

Romans didn't even know that Vesuvius was a volcano until it erupted destroying 3 towns and burying them under 20 metres of volcanic ash and pumice stone, in ancient frescoes of Pompei it was depicted like a normal mountain, with the top intact, no sign of a crater, and with the flanks covered by vineyards and trees (see picture)

Campi Flegrei is far worse, because there is no visible volcano, no cone-shaped mountain, it's like a depression with various very low and km wide craters, the only signs of volcanic activity are gas jets coming out of the ground and the level of the ground that rises and lowers during centuries. The volcanologists always keep an eye on the area of Campi Flegrei, and they have found many signs that the volcano is far from quiet. The ground level has increased of 40cm since 2005, 25cm in 5 years from 2010 to 2015, the gas emissions and underground temperatures are also constantly increasing.
Last eruption happened in 1538 and it was just a minor eruption, it was more like a safety valve, the result of this minor eruption was the creation of a new crater, (see Monte Nuovo on the picture); Like the other super volcanoes (like Yellowstone) the huge eruptions are very very rare; according to volcanologists the last big eruption of Campi Flegrei happened 39.000 years ago, and it was the biggest eruption of the last 200.000 years; the ashes arrived even in Russia and northern Europe, remaining suspended in the upper atmosphere for 2 years altering the climate of Europe and starting a mini ice age which lasted some years, according to them this event contributed to the extinction of Neanderthals which were unable to adapt to the sudden and continuous "volcanic" winter.

Volcano eruptions, asteroid impacts are the real threat humanity. Enough of it in the right areas can be species extinction events.
It has happened before. we have a super volcano under Yellowstone National Park in the USA. If it ever blew up it would wipe out most of our agriculture and farms. Some researchers think that as recent as 12,000 years ago we had some monster asteroid impacts in the USA, park of Europe. Which kinda reset civilization, have fun with this,

    It's not:

Supervolcano That Caused Largest Explosion In History Of Europe May Blow Up Again

The volcanic eruption that formed the Campi Flegrei caldera about 39,000 years ago is believed to be the largest eruption in Europe in the past 200,000 years.

The supervolcano on the coast of Italy last erupted in 1538. Now, the 7.5-mile-wide cauldron-like depression of the volcano shows signs of stirring up again after nearly 500 years of inactivity.
