Default Do you have glaucoma? Are you of African descent?

People of African descent are 5x more likely to have glaucoma than whites.

My mother has it, my grandmother has it, and my great grandmother had it, indicating that it may be due to our residual African ancestry passed down from my great grandmother.

The eye doctor told my mother "I am surprised you have this given that it is much more common among people of African descent" and she indicated that her grandmother also had glaucoma and was partly of African descent. The eye doctor was surprised.

That's pretty interesting. The only person who has it in my family is a second cousin; her mother is cousin of my mom. Her father is half portuguese half colonial brazilian (off white-likely), her mother is half northern italian, 1/4 portuguese and 1/4 hungarian.

The same may be true of her then... it is a carry over trait from what might be distant African ancestry.

I don't have glaucoma but I do have a cataract in my right eye. They call it a juveline cataract which the baby is born with. It doesn't happen often. It's been relatively clear until now. I've realised in the past few weeks that my vision is going a little blurry on that site. It's not terrible but it seems as if someone rubbed vasline on my and I'm looking through the haze. I'll wait until it gets worse. I've got so much health stuff going on with me at the moment that I don't know who to pay first.
