Default Is Austria a catholic country?

A new law was passed which forbidds the Burqua and some leftist politicans wanted to bann the cross from school and courts. They argued that all religions need to be treated equally and that austrian is neutral country. But Austria is a thousand years old country with thousand years old catholic tradition. I dont think these should be treated and considered equally. It needs to be said that Austria is a catholic country.

I believe it is mostly a Catholic country. In fact the royal family of the Austro-Hungarian Empire were very devout Catholics, like Charles I of Austria,

"Following his beatification by the Catholic Church in 2004, he has become commonly known as Blessed Charles of Austria.
As a child, Archduke Charles was reared a devout Roman Catholic. He spent his early years wherever his father's regiment happened to be stationed; later on he lived in Vienna and Reichenau an der Rax. He was privately educated, but, contrary to the custom ruling in the imperial family, he attended a public gymnasium for the sake of demonstrations in scientific subjects. On the conclusion of his studies at the gymnasium, he entered the army, spending the years from 1906 to 1908 as an officer chiefly in Prague, where he studied law and political science concurrently with his military duties.[2]"

Most Austrians are Catholics, but most of them do not practise this religion. They don't believe in God and don't respect the pope and the Catholic priests, they just pay for membership that allow to continue Catholic culture - keep the Churches and cemetries in good condition. They don't respect the rules of the Catholic church, they do what they want; most of them don't go to Catholic-ceremony in church, they should do on Sunday.

I hosted a native austrian girl in my house once (she hosted me before in Viena), and she was shocked that uruguayans "didnt pay to the church", I wasn't sure what she meant so I asked. She told me that almost every austrian is affiliated to the church that automatically take money from them every month. She said the government is associated to the church to be able to do that. She said that even there were some atheists (like her) it would be weird and unpolite to the eyes of society not to be affiliated to the church.

the cross is a part of austrian culture. but burka must be banned due to safety - wearing of it interrupt to recognize a face. it isn't about religion or culture, it's about identification.

Yeah, look at Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's still a practicing Catholic and is married (yet to be divorced) to the member of the prominent Catholic family in America.
