It's not mandatory per se, civilian service is still an option.
Compulsory military training was abolished in 2008. because it didn't make sense to keep it.
In 2006. over 50% of recruits used the possibility of conscientious objection and refused to go to the army, instead, they choose the possibility of civilian service.
9512 out of 17341 were conscientious objectors, that's over 50%.
I was among them too.
If I had the possibility to travel back in time and make the choice again, I'd go to the army.
