Kaiser rolls are thought to have been named to honor Emperor (Kaiser) Francis Joseph I of Austria who reigned from 1848 until 1916.
Kaiser rolls were served at a court banquet of Empress Maria Theresa in 1760.
This roll goes by several names including Imperial, Vienna and Emperor Roll. Kaiser rolls were made by a Viennese baker in about 1487 for Emperor Frederick V, whose profile was stamped on top.
