In 2011, a bust of Modis was erected in the town square of Florina at the expense of the Association of Monastiriots of Florina and Environs "Elpis".
And let's go further north. Here's your Greek great-uncle born in Krushevo:

As they should have been. Church affiliation was by far the main method of self-identification back then.

The Bulgarian church was also founded before the existence of a Bulgarian state. Your "ethnic Macedonians" could have just as easily started their own church, but that never happened. Instead, your ancestors in most parts of Vardar voted in huge numbers to leave the Greek church for the Bulgarian church.

The schools were Greek, Bulgarian or Serbian attended by Macedonian children. The areas under Greek church jurisdiction the schools were Greek. We could start our own church if we were not under attack by Bulgarian and others. Even today we have our own church but it is not recognized by Bulgarian, Serbian and Greek, you can imagine how it was at that time.
