Calling it self-hatred is ridiculous. It's due to some of the attitudes of a sizable segment of Europeans. "Ungrateful" is even more preposterous. Many Americans feel that label applies much better to Europeans today. Despite so much of Europe being under NATO's protection, they still hate us! Most of them refuse to spend what they're obligated to for NATO.

A lot of Americans are descended from people who left Europe because they felt bad here, people who had good lifes in Europe didn't emigrate. Maybe this is one of reasons why many Americans have different mentality than Europeans. They are descended from people who didn't fit in well in Europe.

It's because we are not Europeans, we're Americans. I don't think anyone hates Europeans though. In fact, most people adore most of Europe, especially France, so you have nothing to worry about. We have negative opinions on (some, not all) Eastern Europeans though. The stereotype is that they are all cold blooded and heartless people, and that the women are prostitutes.

All of our ancestors came from Africa at some point, so the same point can be made for white surpremacists.

I guess this stereotype dates back to the Cold War. But Roosevelt was the one who - together with Stalin and Churchill - decided who would be on which side of the wall at Yalta Conference.

I know a Thai-American girl who studies in Poland. She told me that Americans are superficially nice and polite, but heartless underneath. And Poles are less focused on keeping up appearances and less PC, but genuinely nice underneath. I'm just repeating her words, I don't want to offend Americans.

Most definitely so, in my view. However, I think it can be difficult for people with recent immigrant ancestry to adopt an identity that asserts a real and fortified belongingness to the new country. Such a belongingness I think I've discovered for myself via Italian ancestry. We have a history and rightful place in this country that is - I feel, for an abundance of reasons - beyond reproach. When you develop that sort of sentiment, it really binds you to the very basic fabric of your country. But with massive immigration today, I just wonder whether a clear majority of immigrant descendants will truly consider themselves Americans.
