Default What do you think about the crusades?

were they justified? were they utterly wrong? do you think they should have succeeded? what is your opinion?

which sources would you suggest me/us to learn more about it?

The problem is they didn't come to defend christians in Middle east or to protect the birth place of Jesus as they say... Crusader campaigns were actually established just to create an enemy to make the europeans forget about their trashy conditions in those days (create an enemy to make your people forget about your failure in running the state).

also I'd agree with the saying that they came just for Jesus if they didn't slaughter thousands of Muslims and even middle eastern christians when they entered Al-Quds.

Crusades, no matter which ones, were unnecessary - speaking politely. I guess you refer to the crusades which targeted Jerusalem?

Ended up causing more trouble than it was worth.
The only good thing was that it opened trade up with the rest of the world and allowed Europe to advance.

crazylady I will write tommorow more detailed post, bed is calling me, tommorow Archaeological digs lol.

I will only say this for now; they were justified on paper just like Islam justified itself to conquer those Christian/Byzantine provinces in the first place, but behind Crusades it was another agenda overall, much less noble than what they preached; greed.

I'm back tommorow on this thread.

I assume by crusade you mean the one in middle east.

Some of them have been a total fail, a waste of ressource and against there own goal.

But we can imagine that if we didn't bring the war into islamic land, islamics would bring war in our.

It was the right thing to do, but unfortunatly,
not too succesfull. Mekka is still existing, and
    Saracens still occupy Jerusalem.

look at western Europe, look at Turkey with Islam and now compare with your Mazovia (exclude Warsaw and other capitals), and rank (architecture, weather and standards of living...)

They were the most awesome thing ever. I would so readily have joined (the Peasant Crusade probably because I'm from lowly origins and I'd probably wouldn't even have reached Jerusalem and have plundered some Orthodox Christians instead).

At least they inspired one of the greatest medieval songs ever.
