Something I have noticed about us is that we seem to lack much of a sense of our own ethnic consciousness. Many other nationalities around the world are aware of their origins and even if they have citizenship in another country they still identify with their own ethnicity. We never do this. Very few of us would call ourselves English, Welsh or Scottish if we were born and raised in Australia or New Zealand. However it is not uncommon to see that non-Anglo Europeans and Asians still retain their sense of nationality and still identify themselves with their old homelands even after many generations have passed.
Why do we lack this same sense of identity when we settle in other parts of the world?
